The Illinois Pork Producers Association (IPPA) announces the recipients of its 2024 scholarships, aimed at fostering the next generation of leaders in the pork industry. A total of $13,500 has been awarded to nine deserving students from Illinois, supported by the Wilbert & Carol Keppy Foundation.
IPPA President Cheryl Walsh expressed excitement over the high quality of applicants, highlighting their potential to significantly impact the pork industry's future.
The scholarships are categorized into three levels—gold, silver, and bronze—based on the students' academic achievements, involvement in industry-related activities, and insightful essays on the potential impact of Foreign Animal Disease on the pork industry.
The gold scholarships, each valued at $2,000, were awarded to Alex Gifford from Roscoe, Lily Melscheimer from Carmi, and Jhia Walker from Morrisonville.
These students are pursuing degrees in fields from Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering to Nursing and Agri-Business Management, reflecting the diverse expertise beneficial to the pork industry
Silver scholarships of $1,500 each went to Abigail Cook of Pecatonica, Drew Mickey from Taylorville, and Olivia Shike from Sadorus, studying degrees that range from Nursing to Animal Science and Agri-Business.
The bronze category, offering $1,000 each, recognized Hayden Brint of Good Hope, Kaden Davison from Geneseo, and Ellie Drach of Pontiac for their studies in Animal Science and Agricultural Engineering.
Lana Shovlin, Director of Communications for IPPA, commended the winners for their advocacy and passion for the pork industry, anticipating great contributions from them in the future.
This scholarship program not only aids the students financially but also strengthens the agricultural community by investing in its future leaders.
