2024's New Weed Threats in Minnesota

2024's New Weed Threats in Minnesota

By Scout Nelson

In 2024, Minnesota's vigilant efforts in agricultural management marked a significant discovery with the identification of two new prohibited eradicate noxious weeds in three different counties.

This development highlights the persistent challenge and the critical need for proactive measures in weed control within the state.

Noxious weeds pose a serious threat to agriculture, the environment, and local economies, capable of harming crops, livestock, and various properties.

To combat these threats, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) categorizes noxious weeds into four distinct groups: Prohibited Eradicate, Prohibited Control, Restricted, and Specially Regulated, with Prohibited Eradicate being the most severe category demanding immediate and complete eradication.

The two newly identified weeds include Palmer amaranth and hooked hair hops. Palmer amaranth, an aggressive weed known for its resistance to several herbicides, can drastically reduce the yield of row crops.

Meanwhile, hooked hair hop, an invasive vine, poses risks to local flora along riverbanks and streams by displacing native species.

The identification of these species is part of the MDA's larger strategy, which involves close collaboration with county agricultural inspectors, township supervisors, and city mayors. This partnership has been essential in the detection and confirmation of new invasive weed species, ensuring rapid response and management.

Efforts in recent years have shown progress, with a decline in the number of new counties reporting Prohibited Eradicate noxious weeds since 2019. This success is partly due to the reclassification of certain species to less severe categories after they became too widespread, which reflects the dynamic nature of managing these threats.

The MDA continues to support local governments through training programs and enforcement strategies to uphold the Minnesota Noxious Weed Law. This includes verifying reports, collecting samples for university records, and providing necessary resources to manage the spread of these harmful plants.

To further educate and engage the public on this crucial issue, the MDA hosts the Smarty Plants podcast. The upcoming February episode will delve into the Noxious Weed List and discuss these new findings, featuring experts from the MDA and the Department of Natural Resources.

This episode, like others, will be accessible on various platforms including the MDA website, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify, providing valuable insights into the state’s efforts against noxious weeds.
