The 13th annual Driftless Region Beef Conference, scheduled for January 23-24, 2025, at the Grand River Convention Center in Dubuque, will explore timely topics for beef producers. Organized by university extension services in Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin, the event focuses on herd expansion, marketing strategies, and innovative practices in the beef industry.
The conference opens with keynote presentations from two experts. Derrell Peel of Oklahoma State University will provide insights into the current cattle cycle, herd economics, and prospects for rebuilding cow numbers. On Friday, he will deliver an economic outlook tailored to the beef industry.
Troy Rowan from the University of Tennessee will discuss how genetics can improve herd productivity and profitability. His presentations will highlight traits for breeding long-lived cows, the role of genomics in commercial herds, and the benefits of crossbreeding for better calf crops.
Marta Kohmann from the University of Wisconsin will address pasture and forage planning during the Thursday session. Friday offers breakout sessions covering a range of topics. For cow herds, sessions include crossbreeding, pasture management, heifer development, and weed control. Feedlot discussions will focus on risk management, feeding strategies, beef-dairy cattle management, and coping with erratic feed intakes.
Thursday evening features the popular "Bull Pen" panel discussion, where locker plant managers will share insights into marketing beef locally.
The conference concludes Friday with Peel’s comprehensive market outlook.
