By Scout Nelson

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has selected 21 students for the newest Nebraska Elite 11 Veterinarian Program cohort. The program helps address the shortage of food animal veterinarians across Nebraska and supports the future of livestock agriculture in rural communities.

The Nebraska Elite 11 Veterinarian Program operates through a partnership between the University of Nebraska Lincoln and the State of Nebraska. Students receive educational support while preparing for careers in production animal veterinary medicine. The program focuses on strengthening veterinary services that support livestock health, food safety, and agricultural sustainability.

“Nebraska agriculture and rural communities depend on strong veterinary leadership,” said Tom Burkey, interim dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. “Programs like Elite 11 help us invest in talented students who are passionate about animal health, food systems and serving communities across Nebraska. These students represent the future of veterinary medicine in our state.”

Students selected for the newest cohort come from communities across Nebraska. The selected students include Ryggin Meyer of Alliance; Kobe Micek and Josie Rother of Columbus; Olivia Schafer of Daykin; Gavin Gerths of Fairbury; Ava Reikofski of Foster; Austyn Nun of Geneva; Abby Negley of Gothenburg; Lydia Schaapveld of Kennard; Ava Stewart of Newcastle; Jazlyn Arensdorf of North Platte; Ty Ravnsborg of Papillion; Rylee Hofmann of Polk; Khloe Cuttlers of Raymond; Brielle Wolfe of Richland; Grace Steel of Scribner; Kathryn Naber of Seward; Kyle Cavanaugh of Syracuse; Cooper Kreikemeier of West Point; Katlyn Oakley of Wolbach; and Madden Brabec of Wood River.

The students receive the Nebraska Production Animal Health Scholarship during their undergraduate studies. Those continuing through the program may also receive financial support while completing the Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine through a partnership with Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine.
