$99.6M Federal boost for ethanol blend access

$99.6M Federal boost for ethanol blend access

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, led by Secretary Tom Vilsack, has announced a significant federal grant of $99.6 million to facilitate broader access to higher ethanol blends. This funding, part of the Inflation Reduction Act, aims to support the installation of biofuel infrastructure across four Midwestern states, including Iowa.

Kwik Trip and Casey’s are among the major beneficiaries, with Kwik Trip set to receive nearly $10 million. This funding will enable Kwik Trip to install 612 E15 dispensers and 151 B20 dispensers, enhancing biofuel access at 60 stations across Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Iowa.

Similarly, Casey’s will utilize over $3.5 million to upgrade 194 stations with new pumps for E15 and E85 fuels, building on a previous $5 million grant that helped the company install additional E15 dispensers.

These efforts are in line with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s recent initiatives, including a waiver allowing summer sales of E15 and rules facilitating year-round sales starting in 2025 in eight Midwestern states. Iowa has taken proactive steps by mandating that gas stations offer E15 at least one pump by 2026, reflecting the state’s commitment to renewable fuels.

The overarching goal of these grants is to not only increase biofuel usage but also to bolster the economic standing of U.S. farmers and provide consumers with more environmentally friendly fuel options. These investments are expected to significantly impact the availability and use of biofuels, promoting sustainable energy practices across the nation.
