Adam Bensman is now leading the Western Illinois University (WIU) farm as the new farm manager. A graduate of the WIU School of Agriculture, Bensman brings years of competitive livestock experience and a deep passion for agriculture.
His goal is to continue developing the university’s agriculture program, which already stands out for its hands-on learning opportunities.
Raised on a grain farm in Ohio, Bensman’s early exposure to livestock and competitive showing led him to WIU. He became part of the university’s prestigious judging team, and now, as a graduate, he is determined to make a lasting impact on current and future students.
Bensman’s competitive nature drives him to bring out the best in agriculture students, emphasizing the rewarding aspects of farm life. Whether it's harvesting crops or witnessing the birth of new calves, the work in agriculture, though challenging, offers immense satisfaction.
A significant part of Bensman’s vision is maintaining a student-led environment at the WIU farm. He believes this approach gives students a unique advantage, as they actively participate in farm operations, gaining valuable real-world experience that other campuses may lack. This engagement is crucial to the development of agriculture professionals.
Bensman plans to improve the university’s livestock programs. This includes an updated performance bull test and a focus on hog production. He aims to increase student involvement by organizing online sales of pigs, providing students with skills in marketing and digital media such as graphic design and photography.
Keela Trennepohl, the Interim Director of the School of Agriculture, is excited about Bensman’s leadership. She believes his enthusiasm and expertise will take WIU’s agricultural program to new heights.
Bensman’s goal is clear: to increase student engagement and ensure every agriculture student finds their niche on the farm. “Whether it’s livestock or agronomy, there are opportunities for everyone,” he said. The farm is poised to continue offering invaluable hands-on learning experiences for students eager to grow in the field of agriculture.
