Agrivoltaics is emerging as a promising solution that allows agriculture and solar energy production to work together on the same land. As Michigan continues to explore utility-scale solar development, experts suggest that agricultural land can remain productive while also supporting renewable energy generation.
Traditionally, many people have viewed agriculture and solar development as competing land uses. However, agrivoltaics challenges this idea by demonstrating that food production and electricity generation can occur simultaneously. This dual-use approach helps maximize land productivity while supporting both environmental and economic goals.
Solar projects have already been developed on agricultural land in Michigan, with additional projects under review or in planning stages. Instead of removing farmland from production, agrivoltaics can allow activities such as livestock grazing and crop production to continue beneath and around solar installations.
One example of this approach is sheep grazing within solar facilities. Research indicates that managing vegetation at solar sites through livestock grazing can create additional agricultural income while reducing maintenance needs.
