Beef Demand Surge Meets Growing Cattle Supply 2026

Beef Demand Surge Meets Growing Cattle Supply 2026

By Jamie Martin

The cattle industry is entering an important period as it prepares for the spring and summer months, when beef demand usually increases. Market trends related to cattle supply and consumer demand are shaping expectations for 2026.

Recent data shows that cattle on feed totaled 11.55 million heads as of early March. This level is slightly higher compared to the previous month but remains just below last year’s figure. At the same time, feedlot placements reached 1.61 million heads, marking a 4% increase. Meanwhile, marketings fell to 1.52 million heads, which is 7% lower than last year.

This difference between placements and marketings is important. Over the past six months, more cattle have been placed into feedlots than have been sold. This indicates that beef supplies could grow in the near future as these animals are processed.

Seasonal demand patterns also support the market. Memorial Day marks the beginning of peak grilling season, when beef consumption typically rises. Although other meats are popular earlier in spring, beef demand has already shown strong growth this year.

Prices reflect this trend. Since the start of 2026, the choice of beef cutout value has increased sharply by more than 13%. Compared to last year, prices are about 25% higher, showing strong consumer interest in beef products.

Despite these positive signs, risks remain. Cattle supply recovery is a slow process, but demand can change quickly due to economic conditions. A slowdown in the economy could reduce spending on beef, especially during the grilling season.

If demand weakens, prices across the supply chain will likely decline. Lower beef values would reduce what packers can pay for cattle, affecting producers. For now, strong demand continues to support the cattle market's outlook.
