Boost Crop Success with Smart Planting 2026

Boost Crop Success with Smart Planting 2026

By Jamie Martin

With the 2026 planting season drawing near, farmers are focusing on strategies that can help them achieve strong yields and protect their investments. Careful preparation and smart decisions at planting can make a significant difference throughout the season.

The first step is ensuring crops are planted in the right soil conditions. Waiting until the risk of frost has passed allows seeds to germinate properly and develop evenly. Planting too early can result in poor crop stands and may require replanting, which increases costs and reduces efficiency. Proper timing helps farmers get the best performance from their seeds.

“Earlier planting can pay off some years,” said Zach Thompson, retail sales agronomist for Brevant® seeds. “When you plant during the frost period, you set yourself up for a situation in which it’s highly likely you’ll need a replant. Then, if your first-choice hybrid is no longer available, you could be replanting a hybrid that may not fit well on that acre. All the potential is really in the seed. It’s imperative we’re waiting to plant in optimal conditions.”

Another important strategy is making full use of crop protection tools. Today’s seeds include advanced genetics designed to resist pests and diseases. However, combining these traits with products like fungicides and insecticides can further strengthen crop health. This approach helps crops stay productive and reduces the impact of potential threats during the growing season.

Weed control also plays a critical role in crop success. Weeds grow quickly and compete with crops for essential resources. If left unmanaged, they can reduce yields and create long-term problems in the field. Starting with early control methods such as burndown herbicides, followed by residual products, can help farmers manage weeds effectively from the beginning.

Farmers are also encouraged to connect with local agricultural professionals for guidance. These experts can provide valuable insights and help farmers choose the best practices for their fields.

By focusing on proper planting timing, using effective crop protection methods, and controlling weeds early, farmers can improve productivity and set the stage for a successful 2026 growing season.
