Rebecca Blue, a South Dakota agriculture expert, realized the need for better networking opportunities for women in the industry. After returning to her home state and finding limited connections, she created the podcast “The Best Job In South Dakota” to bring attention to women in agriculture. The podcast inspired many women to share their experiences and connect.
Through the podcast, Blue connected with other professionals, including Rachel Lawton from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), who helped blue access funding opportunities. This led to the creation of a new project focused on networking, connecting, and educating women in agriculture.
In partnership with NRCS, the South Dakota Association of Conservation Districts, and other local organizations, a $1.17 million grant was secured to establish regional hubs across the state. These hubs, located in areas like Sioux Falls, Brookings, and Huron, will help women access leadership opportunities, engage in conservation practices, and strengthen their networks.
This initiative also aims to provide valuable conservation knowledge and resources to women in agriculture, allowing them to make a positive impact in their communities. By connecting women with larger organizations and resources, the project aims to empower them and promote sustainable practices that benefit local economies and food security.
The project highlights the vital role women play in shaping the future of agriculture and conservation in South Dakota.
