Michigan State University will host a specialized training session on humane livestock euthanasia using captive bolt devices on October 21, 2025. The workshop will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the MSU Pavilion, located at 4301 Farm Lane in Lansing.
The program is designed specifically for first responders associated with the Monroe, Lapeer, Gratiot, and Midland ERAIL trailers. It aims to provide practical training in humane animal care during emergency situations where euthanasia may be required.
Topics to be covered include identifying compromised animals, understanding animal anatomy and target locations, rules of animal ownership, animal restraint and safety, and methods of euthanasia. The workshop will also feature a hands-on training component to ensure participants are confident in applying their skills in the field.
Organizers emphasize that humane handling and proper euthanasia techniques are critical for both animal welfare and responder safety. By equipping first responders with this knowledge, the program strengthens preparedness for livestock-related emergencies across Michigan communities.
The registration deadline is October 13, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Refreshments will be provided during the session.
