Farmers today face tight timelines, unpredictable weather, and increasing complexity in their operations. To meet these challenges, the Center for Digital Agriculture (CDA) is using modern digital tools like AI, cloud computing, and autonomous machines to improve productivity and simplify day-to-day farming.
CDA brings together experts in computer science, engineering, and agricultural sciences. Their work focuses on real-world research, training the next generation of workers, and supporting local farming communities.
Precision agriculture is one major focus. Tools like auto-guidance and cloud-connected systems help machines work faster, more accurately, and even after dark. CDA also uses AI to recognize plants and animals, gives real-time crop advice, and helps small and medium farms benefit from smart tools.
Data plays a big role in this transformation. Sensors, weather feeds, and drones collect information that flows into Farm Management Information Systems (FMIS).
From there, automated instructions help tractors, irrigation systems, and robots adjust on the fly—making farming more efficient.
With weather becoming more extreme, CDA works with scientists to turn uncertainty into useful insights. Soil sensors, weather forecasts, and decision tools help farmers make smarter choices day by day and season by season.
Looking ahead, CDA is pushing farming from automation to full autonomy. This means developing systems of machines that plan, work, and adjust together, safely and efficiently. Their research supports everything from field mapping and safe navigation to multi-vehicle coordination and safety systems.
To support these changes, CDA also trains students and adults in digital-agriculture careers, including hands-on projects and degree programs that combine computing with crop science.
CDA’s goal is to give farmers better tools, faster decisions, and greater control—helping them grow more while doing less, now and in the future.
