Community Webinar Series Explores Energy Data Centers

Community Webinar Series Explores Energy Data Centers

By Andi Anderson

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Community and Economic Development has announced a new set of sessions under its monthly webinar series, Community Matters Live. This initiative is designed to support individuals involved in housing, planning, local government, and community development across Iowa.

The webinar series focuses on key issues that affect local communities and provides useful knowledge through experts and specialists. It connects Extension professionals, researchers, and decision-makers to discuss practical solutions for real-world challenges faced by communities.

Jen Hargrove, Community Development Specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, emphasized the importance of these discussions. "From energy costs to data center development to city budgeting, these topics are already part of conversations in communities across Iowa," said Jen Hargrove, Community Development Specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. “Community Matters Live gives local officials and partners a way to explore those issues with experts and think through what they may mean locally.”

The program is beneficial for a wide range of participants, including local elected officials, city and county staff, planners, zoning officials, economic development professionals, nonprofit workers, and others involved in decision-making processes.

Three upcoming sessions will address important topics. The first session, on July 22, will focus on distributed wind energy and how it can help reduce energy costs while improving energy reliability for farms, homes, and small businesses. It will also include insights on zoning, permitting, and site planning.

The second session, on August 26, will explore the development of data centers. Participants will learn about key factors such as site selection, utility use, environmental impact, and regulatory requirements. This session will help communities understand how to prepare for such developments.

The third session, on September 23, will discuss city budgeting. Experts will share strategies on managing limited financial resources, planning for future needs, and finding creative solutions to budget challenges.

Each session will take place from noon to 1 p.m. and will provide participants with practical guidance that can be applied in their own communities. The series aims to strengthen local decision-making by offering clear and useful knowledge on important topics affecting community growth and development.
