Conservation Farming Supports Growth of Renewable Fuel Sector

Conservation Farming Supports Growth of Renewable Fuel Sector

By Andi Anderson

Conservation farming is gaining attention as it supports both the environment and the growing need for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

Farmers using techniques like no-till farming, cover cropping, and fewer trips across fields are reducing the Carbon Intensity (CI) of their crops. These low-emission practices make corn more suitable for use in SAF production.

Illinois corn farmer Justin Rahn recently shared his experience at the "Illinois Future of Fuels" conference. He explained how practices like minimal tilling and cover crops not only improve soil health but also lower greenhouse gas emissions. Some cover crops even help trap carbon in the soil, further enhancing sustainability.

To qualify for SAF markets, farmers must track their practices. Organizations like Precision Conservation Management (PCM) help farmers by collecting data on planting methods, fertilizer use, field passes, yields, and transportation. This data helps farmers understand what works and helps companies verify sustainable methods.

However, conservation farming has its challenges. Cover crops can be hard to manage due to unpredictable weather and dry soil.

The high cost of these practices also discourages some farmers. Rahn stressed the need for financial support, suggesting that companies using ethanol should help fund these practices.

Rahn believes incentives can motivate more farmers to adopt sustainable methods. Some still use older methods like chisel plowing to deal with soil issues, showing the need for balance between sustainability and profits.

For farmers new to conservation, Rahn suggests starting small. Trying it on part of a field first helps understand what works best. With time, farmers can expand their efforts and benefit from both healthier soil and access to new fuel markets.

Conservation practices not only protect the land but also open new doors for farmers in the renewable energy sector.
