Doug Chapin, board chairman of the Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA), has been a vital leader in the dairy industry, particularly during the challenging H5N1 outbreak earlier this year.
He has been honored with the Farmer Communicator of the Year award by the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF).
When many were uncertain about how to handle the situation, Chapin stepped forward to advocate for dairy farmers and ensure that they had the support they needed to navigate the crisis.
His efforts were crucial, both in Michigan and nationally, as he worked with legislators and regulators to promote a science-based response to the virus.
Chapin played a key role in communicating with both the media and the agriculture community.
He ensured that dairy farmers could continue operating while following the guidelines set by Michigan authorities and the USDA. His leadership helped maintain stability in the dairy industry at a time when the outbreak posed significant risks.
“Our goal was to make sure the response was manageable for dairy producers and that they could continue operating within the guidelines,” Chapin said, highlighting his dedication to supporting farmers.
In addition to his work during the H5N1 crisis, Chapin was instrumental in the Federal Milk Marketing Order (FMMO) reform process. During the FMMO hearings, he advocated for the “higher of” Class III or IV pricing method for the Class I mover, a proposal backed by his farm's experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. His testimony was supported by data, further demonstrating his commitment to ensuring fair pricing for dairy farmers.
Chapin’s leadership and communication efforts were recognized earlier this month when he received the 2024 Farmer Communicator of the Year award from the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF).
This award acknowledges his outstanding contributions to the dairy industry during both the H5N1 outbreak and the FMMO reform process.
Through his advocacy and leadership, Doug Chapin continues to be a champion for dairy farmers, ensuring their voices are heard and their interests are protected.
