Dairy webinar focuses on milk order reforms

Dairy webinar focuses on milk order reforms

By Andi Anderson

On Oct. 16, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will host a webinar focusing on proposed changes to the Federal Milk Marketing Order, a policy that could have significant impacts on milk prices and dairy farm profitability.

The webinar will run from noon to 1 p.m. and will cover what many are calling the most important changes to dairy policy in two decades.

Dairy farmers, consultants, and industry representatives are encouraged to attend, as the proposed changes could alter how milk is priced and sold in the U.S.

Dairy cooperatives and producers will vote on the finalized changes in November, making this webinar an essential opportunity to understand how these revisions might impact their operations.

The webinar will feature two experts from the University of Wisconsin—Madison: Charles Nicholson and Leonard Polzin. Nicholson, an associate professor, specializes in analyzing dairy markets, policies, and supply chains, with research support from the University of Wisconsin Dairy Innovation Hub.

Polzin, a dairy markets and policy outreach specialist, brings practical experience from growing up on a Wisconsin dairy farm and working in both public and private sectors.

Nicholson’s expertise lies in understanding the complex dynamics of dairy markets, while Polzin applies research to real-world scenarios to guide producers on market expectations, risk management, and policy analysis.

Together, they will provide insight into how the proposed changes could affect the industry, from pricing structures to farm profitability.

Producers, consultants, and industry representatives interested in attending this free webinar should register at least one hour prior to the event. This session will help dairy stakeholders navigate upcoming policy decisions and prepare for potential shifts in the dairy market.
