The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) today announced a new rule, pushing its total regulatory output to an unprecedented 3,000 pages over the past 18 months. This latest 600-page addition has stirred concerns among the farming community about the practicality and fairness of such extensive regulations.
Zippy Duvall, President of the American Farm Bureau Federation, voiced his disapproval, highlighting the burden these regulations place on farmers. According to Duvall, while farmers are committed to the safety and protection of their workers and support efforts to clamp down on labor abuses, the continuous influx of complex regulations presumes guilt rather than innocence.
The sheer volume of new rules not only complicates compliance but also increases reliance on legal assistance to navigate these changes, indirectly supporting the legal industry rather than the agricultural sector. Duvall criticizes the DOL for continuously moving the goalposts, making it increasingly difficult for farmers to keep up with the regulatory demands.
This growing regulatory framework has sparked a debate about the balance between necessary worker protections and the imposition of unrealistic compliance burdens on farmers. As the DOL continues to roll out new regulations, the agricultural community calls for more reasonable and manageable approaches to addressing labor issues without compromising farm operations' viability and privacy.
