Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, in collaboration with the ISU Digital Ag Innovation Lab, is set to host a foundational workshop focusing on drone technology in agriculture.
Scheduled for July 30 at the Southeast Research and Demonstration Farm near Crawfordsville, this event marks the latest addition to the "Research to Rows" series.
This introductory workshop is aimed at farmers and agriculture retailers eager to explore the potential of drones, officially known as UAVs, in their operations.
Attendees will delve into a variety of relevant topics, including the basics of drone technology, differences between recreational and commercial piloting, the process of purchasing and registering drones, as well as best practices for flight and app usage.
Further discussions will cover data processing, visualization techniques, and a look into future drone workshops.
Leading the workshop are Doug Houser, a digital agriculture extension specialist, and Ryan Huffman, digital agronomy research manager with the ISU Digital Ag Innovation Lab.
Both are committed to educating participants on the legal and practical aspects of drone technology in farming, emphasizing its growing role in enhancing on-farm decision-making through added data layers.
The event requires advance registration, with a fee of $75 covering lunch, refreshments, and handouts. Registration concludes on July 26, and attendance is capped at 25 participants.
Special incentives are available for early registrants who farm in Iowa, including a drone flight over an 80-acre corn or soybean field to collect field health imagery.
The workshop schedule begins with check-in at 8:30 a.m., followed by sessions from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Interested individuals can secure their spot by visiting Iowa State University's registration page.
