Extend pond life with expert tips

Extend pond life with expert tips

By Scout Nelson

Gathering near a pond can make for a perfect summer evening, but maintaining these water bodies is crucial, explains Joe Gerken, a fisheries specialist with K-State Research and Extension.

"Every pond in the world has a dream of being a prairie and eventually it will turn into one if we leave it alone," Gerken said. This transformation occurs as sediment fills the pond, making it shallower, which can lead to nutrient buildup and result in excessive plant growth and stagnant, odorous water.

Most ponds in Kansas are estimated to have a lifespan of about 18 years; however, with diligent care, their longevity can be significantly extended. Gerken emphasizes the importance of managing the environment directly around and upstream of the pond. Establishing robust vegetation around the pond can effectively block sediment from entering the water.

"When you look at the edge of the pond, it should have a slope of three feet for every one foot you go out into the pond, and that is important because if it is too shallow the sunlight will hit the bottom of the pond, causing plant growth," Gerken advises. Additionally, it's beneficial to manage areas beyond the pond's immediate vicinity by planting vegetation in upstream valleys and ravines to limit further sediment inflow.

Monitoring the water's condition is also crucial; a brown and murky appearance usually indicates excessive sediment. "A lot of times, trusting your intuition when looking at the pond is a great place to start and make adjustments if it starts looking bad," suggests Gerken. Following these expert tips can help ensure your pond remains a delightful gathering place for many more years.
