Fall 2026 Master Gardener Training Opens in Allen and Whitley

Fall 2026 Master Gardener Training Opens in Allen and Whitley

By Andi Anderson

Allen and Whitley counties are partnering to offer the Fall 2026 Extension Master Gardener Basic Training program. The educational course is designed for individuals who are interested in gardening, horticulture, and community service. Participants will learn practical skills and gain valuable knowledge that can be shared with local communities.

The training covers a wide range of horticultural topics. Students will study ornamental plants, fruit and vegetable production, soil health, invasive species, plant pests, and many other important gardening subjects. The goal of the program is to prepare volunteers to become trusted sources of horticultural information within their communities.

Classes will be conducted in person and led by experienced experts and professionals. The program provides hands-on learning opportunities and allows participants to interact directly with instructors and fellow gardening enthusiasts. To successfully complete the training, participants must attend classes held in both Allen County and Whitley County.

The training schedule runs every Monday evening from September 14 through December 21, 2026. Classes will take place from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Sessions from September 14 to October 26 will be held at the Allen County Extension Office in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Classes from November 2 to December 21 will move to the Whitley County 4-H Center located on the Whitley County Fairgrounds in Columbia City, Indiana.

The registration fee for the program is $180.00. This cost includes all training sessions as well as a printed educational manual that participants can use throughout the course and beyond.

Upon completing the training, participants must pass a written examination to earn the status of Master Gardener Intern. Afterward, interns can complete volunteer service activities within their communities to achieve full Master Gardener certification. This structure helps ensure that graduates not only gain knowledge but also use their skills to benefit others.

A scholarship opportunity is available for eligible participants who plan to volunteer in Allen County. The scholarship is supported by the Allen County Master Gardener Association and is intended to assist individuals who may otherwise be unable to participate in the training.

The program offers an excellent opportunity for individuals to expand their gardening knowledge, develop practical skills, and serve their communities through horticultural education and volunteerism.
