Farm Bill Delay Leaves Illinois Corn Farmers Facing Uncertainty

Illinois corn farmers are facing uncertainty after the Agriculture Act of 2026 failed to gain enough support to move forward in the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry. With the current extension set to expire on September 30, many farmers and agricultural businesses are waiting for clear direction on future farm policies.

The Farm Bill plays an important role in supporting farmers across the country. It provides a framework for managing risks, strengthening agricultural markets, supporting conservation efforts, and improving long-term farm profitability. Without a new bill in place, farmers must continue making important business decisions under temporary extensions.

Several priorities remain important for Illinois corn farmers as lawmakers continue discussions. These include year-round nationwide E15 availability, increased funding for the Market Access Program (MAP) and Foreign Market Development (FMD) Program, mandatory base acre updates, and improvements to crop insurance programs.

Farm leaders are also advocating for a solution to Proposition 12 challenges, support for voluntary conservation programs, greater fertilizer price transparency, and bipartisan cooperation on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding and related provisions.

Commenting on the delay, Mark Bunselmeyer, ICGA President and Maroa, Illinois farmer, said, “While we're disappointed the Senate Agriculture Committee did not advance a Farm Bill before the August recess, we understand there is still work to do. We want Congress to continue refining the bill to ensure it maintains the bipartisan support needed for passage. That includes strengthening key priorities for Illinois corn farmers while preserving important programs like SNAP that connect the Farm Bill from the people growing our food to the families who rely on it. Illinois farmers need the certainty of a strong, bipartisan Farm Bill before the current extension expires.”

The Illinois Corn Growers Association (ICGA) also acknowledged Senator Durbin for proposing amendments focused on mandatory base acre updates and crop insurance reform. These efforts highlight ongoing support for Illinois farmers and their needs.

As discussions continue, agricultural organizations are encouraging lawmakers to work together on a bipartisan Farm Bill that supports farmers, rural communities, and consumers. Farmers remain hopeful that Congress will reach an agreement before the current extension expires, providing the certainty needed for future planning and investment. ICGA is also encouraging farm families to share their experiences with lawmakers through advocacy efforts to help shape future agricultural policies.
