Multiple agricultural organizations have expressed strong support for the US Department of Agriculture's (USDA) proposed rule, "Poultry Grower Payment Systems and Capital Improvement Systems." The rule targets potential abuses within the poultry industry, particularly regarding broiler chicken producers.
The National Farmers Union (NFU) specifically applauds the rule's focus on addressing unfair practices in the "tournament" ranking system, a method some poultry companies use to influence grower pay.
Additionally, the NFU supports the rule's aim to prevent poultry companies from pressuring growers into making unnecessary facility investments.
Another group, Organizations for Competitive Markets (OCM) and its advocacy arm, Competitive Markets Action (CMA), released a joint statement commending the USDA for its initiative. Marty Irby, president of CMA, expressed their hope for a swift finalization of the regulations.
Steve Etka, policy director of the Campaign for Contract Agriculture Reform (CCAR), highlighted the rule's potential to prevent exploitation of poultry growers by large companies. He views the proposal as a crucial step towards ensuring fairness in contracting practices within the poultry industry.
The USDA's proposed rule has sparked positive reactions from several agricultural groups who believe it will create a more balanced and equitable environment for poultry growers in the US.
