Nebraska farm and ranch families are encouraged to attend a free educational workshop focused on farm succession and estate planning. The event is organized by the Nebraska Rural Response Hotline in partnership with the Nebraska Department of Agriculture’s Beginning Farmer Tax Credit and Negotiations Programs, Nebraska Extension, and the Nebraska Farmers Union Foundation. The goal is to help agricultural producers prepare for the future of their operations through practical planning and education.
The Farm and Ranch Succession Workshop will take place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture Welcome Center located at 610 E Sixth St., Curtis. The workshop is designed to provide clear guidance for families looking to begin, improve, or finalize plans for transferring farms and ranches to the next generation.
The program will feature expert speakers for the event include Weston Svoboda, an agriculturalist and law student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and Jessica Groskopf, an agricultural economist with Nebraska Extension. Participants will learn about important topics such as estate and succession planning, including key decisions and available planning tools. The workshop will also explain transfer rules, tax implications, and portability issues that can affect long-term family operations.
Additional sessions will cover the use of Limited Liability Companies (LLCs) in succession planning, including buy-sell agreements and asset protection strategies. Attendees will also learn about options, lease rights, preemptive rights, and financial management considerations that play an important role in successful transition planning.
Refreshments for participants will be provided by the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture. Organizers emphasize that early planning helps families reduce uncertainty and avoid future conflicts.
“This workshop is intended to help farm and ranch families start, continue, or refine their succession and estate plans,” Groskopf said. “Planning for the future ensures a smooth transition to the next generation and protects the legacy of Nebraska’s agricultural producers.”
Although the event is free, participants are encouraged to register in advance to help organizers prepare materials and refreshments. Registration and additional information are available through the Nebraska Rural Response Hotline at 1-800-464-0258.
This workshop is supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture under agreement number FSA22CPT0012189.
