Farmland vs. Solar - Balancing act in energy transition

Farmland vs. Solar - Balancing act in energy transition

By Jamie Martin

The growing need for solar energy is leading to more farmland being converted into solar panel fields. However, some argue that solar and agriculture can coexist.

A growing debate pits protecting farmland against the need for renewable energy. This conflict involves policymakers, industry groups, and lawmakers as they work on the 2024 Farm Bill.

A promising solution called "agrivoltaics" could be a casualty in this clash. Agrivoltaics allows for land to be used for both solar energy generation and food production.

The pressure to convert farmland to solar is likely to increase. The American Farmland Trust warns that millions of acres of productive farmland could become solar fields unless the federal government intervenes. This raises concerns about potential food security issues.

Finding a balance is crucial. While solar energy is vital for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting fertile land for food production is equally important.
