FFA teaches kids essential farm safety

FFA teaches kids essential farm safety

By Andi Anderson

The Blooming Prairie FFA Chapter in Minnesota recently held its annual Farm Safety Day, aimed at educating local elementary students on staying safe around farm equipment and animals.

This event allows students to engage in hands-on learning, rather than just listening in a classroom setting, making the lessons more impactful and memorable.

The FFA chapter partnered with local farmers, who brought various types of farm equipment to the event, including a tractor, combine, ATV, grain cart, and a semi-trailer truck. Students were given a tour of the machinery, with FFA members explaining how to remain safe while working near or with these tools.

In addition to machinery, animals like horses, goats, cattle, sheep, and dogs were also brought to teach students about safe handling and interaction with livestock.

Beyond safety demonstrations, the event also included presentations from regional FFA officers and local police officers, who further highlighted the importance of safety on the farm and in the community. This collaborative effort provided a comprehensive learning experience for the young students.

The event not only benefited the elementary students, but also had a positive impact on the FFA members involved. They refreshed their own safety knowledge and gained valuable communication skills by explaining their equipment, animal handling, and FFA experiences to the students.

The experience reinforced their desire to make a difference in their community by reducing farm accidents.

The chapter hopes events like Farm Safety Day will continue to reduce farm accidents and raise awareness about the importance of safety on the farm, ensuring future generations are well-equipped with the knowledge needed to work safely around farm machinery and animals.
