Forage Fields in Nebraska Face Hail Recovery

Forage Fields in Nebraska Face Hail Recovery

By Scout Nelson

Recent severe hailstorms across the Nebraska Panhandle have caused significant damage to pastures, alfalfa fields, and summer annual forages. Nebraska Extension specialists are advising producers on how to manage and recover these affected areas.

For perennial pastures, the recommendation is to remove grazing animals and allow plants time to rest. Grazing too soon, especially after hail and drought stress, can reduce plant health and future yield potential. Experts suggest delaying grazing until fall or even the next growing season to help the plants recover fully.

In the case of alfalfa, damage assessment and timing are crucial. “Fields with more than two weeks before harvest can usually be left alone, with some yield loss expected,” says Nebraska Extension. If over 50 percent of terminal buds are damaged and harvest is near, cutting may continue as planned with yield reductions. For lodged alfalfa, waiting three to four days helps plants stand upright before cutting. Disk mowers are preferred for better pickup, and adjusting mower settings helps in recovery.

Annual forages may still regrow depending on the crop type, growth stage, and weather. If regrowth potential is low, replanting might be the best option. Damaged forages often become more vulnerable to weed competition, and herbicide use may be required to control weed pressure.

Nebraska Extension educators and specialists are available to help producers with tailored advice for managing their specific situations. Whether the damage involves grasslands, alfalfa, or summer annual forages, careful evaluation and timely actions can support successful forage recovery and reduce the risk of long-term productivity loss.
