The University of Nebraska–Lincoln has announced that conservation photographer and educator Michael Forsberg is the 2025 recipient of the Howard L. Wiegers Nebraska Outstanding Wildlife Conservation Award. Presented by the UNL Wildlife Club, the award honors individuals who have made remarkable contributions to wildlife understanding, management, or conservation in Nebraska.
Forsberg has spent nearly 30 years capturing the wildlife and landscapes of North America's Great Plains through his photography. His work has elevated public awareness and inspired generations of students, conservationists, and nature lovers.
“Photography can be a powerful witness to our impact on the natural world and a reminder of the beauty and hope that remain,” Forsberg said. “Through this book, my hope is that readers feel a connection to these incredible birds and are inspired to protect them for future generations.”
His latest project, Into Whooper land: A Photographer’s Journey with Whooping Cranes, offers a personal and artistic tribute to one of North America’s rarest bird species. The 224-page book combines compelling storytelling and imagery that highlights the importance of conserving these majestic birds and their habitats.
Forsberg is also the co-founder of the Platte Basin Timelapse project, which documents environmental changes in the Great Plains watershed. In addition, he serves as the conservation photographer in residence at the School of Natural Resources, where he mentors future conservation leaders.
“It is special to be able to recognize one of our own faculty for his personal impact on conservation in the Great Plains,” said the director of the School of Natural Resources.
The Wiegers Award has previously honored notable conservationists and educators, including National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore. Forsberg’s blend of advocacy, artistry, and education continues to shape conservation efforts and deepen connections between people and nature.
