Free Field Day Teaches Organic Grape Growing

Free Field Day Teaches Organic Grape Growing

By Scout Nelson

The South Dakota Specialty Producers Association (SDSPA) invites farmers, gardeners, and anyone interested in organic agriculture to a free, hands-on vineyard field day on Monday, October 13, 2025.

The event takes place at Lewis and Clark Lake Vineyard in Yankton, South Dakota, and offers valuable guidance for both new and experienced growers.

From 12 to 2 p.m. CDT, vineyard expert Greg Stach leads a guided walk through the vineyard. Participants learn to recognize different stages of grape plant health and discover soil-building strategies that support strong vines.

Stach shares practical tips for successful grape production under organic management and explains how biodynamic farming improves timing, biodiversity, and overall farm balance.

After the vineyard tour, the program continues from 2 to 4 p.m. at the nearby Lewis and Clark Resort meeting room. Dr. Angela Jackson, SDSPA Organic Transition Advisor, presents a detailed session on how to move vineyards and orchards toward USDA Organic certification.

Her talk covers recordkeeping requirements, approved inputs, and conservation practices needed for a smooth transition.

This field day provides a unique chance to learn about organic farming directly from experts. Attendees explore how to care for soil, manage grape health, and adopt practices that meet national organic standards. Light refreshments are served, and all area growers, technical service providers, and beginning farmers are welcome.

By attending, participants gain practical knowledge about sustainable vineyard management and the steps to achieve official organic certification. The event highlights how South Dakota producers can build healthier soil, create thriving ecosystems, and bring high-quality grapes to market through eco-friendly methods.

This educational opportunity helps farmers connect with professionals, share experiences, and strengthen South Dakota’s growing community of organic producers.
