Farmers and hay producers can enhance their knowledge of haymaking by joining Iowa State University’s free virtual hay school, Basics of Haymaking, in March.
This three-part series will provide essential information on forage selection, harvesting, storage, and pest control to improve hay production and quality.
The virtual sessions will take place on March 17, 24, and 31 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. Each session will focus on different aspects of hay production:
- Session 1: Forage selection, fertility, and establishment
- Session 2: Harvesting, storage, and hay economics
- Session 3: Pest management, including insect, weed, and disease control
The workshop will cover agronomic practices to help farmers improve yield, maintain forage health, and manage potential threats. According to Shelby Gruss, assistant professor in forage extension at Iowa State University, proper fertility management, weed control, and harvest timing can significantly enhance hayfield productivity and longevity.
There is no cost to attend the workshop, but online registration is required. Participants will receive a link to join the sessions, and recordings will be available for later viewing.
With increasing demand for high-quality hay, farmers can benefit from expert guidance on effective hay production strategies.
