The United Nations has proclaimed 2026 as the International Year of the Woman Farmer, recognizing women's significant contributions to global food production.
Women farmers are responsible for about half of the food grown worldwide, playing a crucial role in maintaining global food security. This special year aims to celebrate and enhance the visibility of women in agriculture while addressing their social and economic challenges.
USDA Undersecretary Alexis Taylor expressed pride in the U.S. leading the resolution, supported by 123 nations and adopted by the U.N. General Assembly in May.
This initiative marks the first time the United States has spearheaded an 'international year' at the U.N., emphasizing the importance the U.S. places on the roles of women in agriculture both domestically and globally.
The designation of this year offers an opportunity to promote policies that support women farmers in overcoming barriers to equal participation and access in agriculture.
It also serves as a reminder of the need for continued efforts to ensure that women in agriculture receive the recognition and support they deserve, helping to foster a more inclusive and productive agricultural sector worldwide.
