Hunters Help Fight Hunger in Michigan

Hunters Help Fight Hunger in Michigan

By Andi Anderson

The Hunters Feeding Michigan program is a long-standing initiative led by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Its goal is to connect hunters, wild game processors, and charities to provide nutritious protein to people in need across the state.

The Food Bank Council of Michigan (FBCM) is now the official contract holder for this program, replacing a former vendor. Garrett Zuver, Agriculture Program Specialist at FBCM, explained that while the council has been involved in the venison donation effort since the 1990s, they now officially lead the partnership with the DNR.

FBCM oversees seven regional food banks that serve all 83 counties in Michigan. These food banks work with local organizations like church pantries, homeless shelters, school meal programs, and soup kitchens to distribute food to those in need.

The recent cancellation of 32 truckloads of food, mainly protein, due to federal cuts has made the DNR program even more important. According to Zuver, protein remains one of the most requested food items by families. He emphasized that Michigan’s large population of hunters and abundant deer make this program a great opportunity to provide high-quality venison to those who need it most.

In addition to supplying venison, FBCM is helping families by sharing cooking tips and recipe handouts to guide those who may not be familiar with preparing wild game.

This program not only reduces food waste but also helps fight hunger in a healthy and sustainable way, showing how communities and hunters can work together to make a positive difference.
