The Indiana I-74 Business Corridor has introduced a new Agricultural Strategy Activation initiative aimed at turning regional agricultural plans into real economic development opportunities. The program is designed to strengthen agribusiness growth, attract investment, and create new opportunities for communities across southeastern and east-central Indiana.
The initiative builds on the Interstate 74 Regional Agriculture Strategy completed in 2023. That strategy identified agriculture as one of the region's most valuable economic strengths and outlined ways to expand agribusiness, food processing, workforce development, infrastructure, and supply chain networks. The new activation effort focuses on moving those recommendations from the planning stage to practical action.
Supported by Duke Energy's Economic Development Partnership Program, the initiative highlights the region's commitment to creating a stronger and more competitive agricultural economy. Key areas of focus include food and beverage manufacturing, bioprocessing, agricultural innovation, and value-added agribusiness investments. The effort will benefit Dearborn, Decatur, Franklin, Ripley, Rush, and Shelby counties, along with the City of Batesville.
Agriculture continues to play a vital role in the region's economy. By encouraging investment and supporting business development, local leaders hope to strengthen markets for agricultural products while creating new career opportunities for residents. The initiative also aims to improve collaboration between farmers, agribusinesses, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and economic development organizations.
“The Ag Strategy gave us a strong regional vision,” said Mike Perleberg, President of the I-74 Business Corridor. “This activation initiative is about moving from planning to implementation. We are working county by county to identify projects, support existing agribusinesses, and pursue new investment opportunities that can create jobs, expand markets for agricultural producers, and strengthen our regional economy.”
The six-month activation program is being led by Dr. Virgil Bremer and David Coates, agricultural economic development consultants with AgStrat LLC. County-level meetings have already started, bringing stakeholders together to evaluate local agricultural resources and identify opportunities for future growth. These discussions are helping communities prioritize projects that align with regional strengths and market needs.
A key goal of the initiative is to develop market-ready projects that can attract investors and deliver long-term economic benefits. Local leaders are assessing agricultural assets, infrastructure needs, workforce opportunities, and business development possibilities to ensure sustainable growth across the region.
The Indiana I-74 Business Corridor represents an 80-mile economic corridor connecting Indianapolis and Cincinnati. Through partnerships among local economic development organizations and utility providers, the corridor continues to support business expansion, attract new investment, and strengthen regional competitiveness.
By focusing on agricultural innovation, food manufacturing, and value-added agribusiness opportunities, the activation initiative is expected to help communities capitalize on one of their strongest industries. The effort demonstrates a commitment to supporting farmers, expanding agribusiness markets, creating jobs, and promoting long-term economic prosperity throughout the region.
