Indiana Ports Launch Internship To Build Logistics Workforce

Indiana Ports Launch Internship To Build Logistics Workforce

By Andi Anderson

Ports of Indiana and Indiana University Southeast have partnered to introduce a new internship program aimed at strengthening the state’s logistics workforce. This initiative will give college students practical exposure to port operations and related industries.

The program began in May with its first intern, Jonas Powers, a second-year student studying Supply Chain Management. During the 15-week internship, he will gain hands-on experience in transportation, logistics, agribusiness, warehousing, and port operations. He will also work with multiple companies involved in trade and freight activities.

Ports of Indiana operates three major ports that play an important role in the state’s economy. These ports support around 50,000 jobs and generate an annual economic impact of $8.7 billion. To meet the growing demand for skilled workers, the internship program is expected to expand across different port locations through partnerships with universities.

"Indiana's logistics industry depends on a strong workforce, and that starts by helping young people see the exciting career opportunities available in our ports and supply chains,” said Jody Peacock, CEO for Ports of Indiana. “Through our partnership with IU Southeast, we can introduce students to high-demand careers while raising awareness of the vital roles ports play in connecting Indiana businesses to global markets and driving long-term economic growth.”

Indiana University Southeast, known for its quality education and strong student outcomes, supports this initiative by connecting classroom learning with real-world experience. The university ensures that students are prepared for professional careers through such programs.

"IU Southeast is excited to partner with Ports of Indiana and offer our students this valuable internship experience,” said Dr. Debbie Ford, Chancellor of Indiana University Southeast. “Partnerships like this create powerful opportunities for our students to connect their classroom learning with real-world experience. By working alongside respected employers, our students gain valuable professional skills while strengthening the talent pipeline that helps our regional economy grow.”

The logistics sector plays a major role in employment, with one out of every five jobs in Indiana related to this field. The maritime industry alone employs 650,000 workers in the United States.

With continued investments, including a $100 million development program and new port facilities, this internship initiative will help prepare students for future careers while supporting economic growth and industry needs.
