Insights on Education and Regional Growth

By Scout Nelson

Iowa State University economics professor John Winters is set to lead a presentation at North Dakota State University's Challey Institute. The event, part of the Human Progress and Flourishing Workshop series, is scheduled for February 21, from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Beckwith Recital Hall. It will also be available via Zoom for remote participants.

The workshop, titled "Regional Human Capital and Higher Education," is free and accessible to both the NDSU community and the general public. The session will include a 40-minute lecture by Winters followed by an audience Q&A session. Attendees will also enjoy light refreshments in the Challey School of Music Atrium post-presentation.

In his talk, Winters will delve into the crucial roles that education and entrepreneurship play in fostering regional economic prosperity, with a focus on the American Heartland. His insights are backed by extensive research in regional economics and labor economics, exploring the migration of college students, human capital impacts on regional economies, and more.

Winters, who holds a doctorate from Georgia State University and a bachelor's from Mississippi State University, is also a founding editor of the outreach journal Reaching Regions. His work, published in numerous esteemed journals, addresses vital issues like STEM labor market dynamics and the effects of economic events like the fracking boom.

This workshop is part of a series hosted by the Challey Institute, which brings internationally recognized scholars to discuss research that fosters societal and individual flourishing through innovation and opportunity. The event promises to offer valuable insights for anyone interested in the interplay between education and economic development.
