Agriculture remains one of the most hazardous industries in the United States, with thousands of injuries and hundreds of deaths reported each year due to machinery, vehicles, environmental conditions, and other farm-related incidents.
Understanding the causes and patterns behind these injuries is essential for improving workplace safety and reducing future accidents.
To support agricultural safety efforts, researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign have developed the Agricultural Injury Dashboard, an interactive platform that allows users to explore and analyze injury data in a simple and customized way.
The tool was designed to provide valuable information for educators, researchers, and others involved in agricultural safety initiatives.
The dashboard includes agricultural injury data from five Midwestern states and offers multiple search options that allow users to filter information based on different needs.
By selecting specific categories, users can gain a deeper understanding of injury trends and identify areas that may require additional safety education or prevention measures.
According to Salah Issa, Illinois Extension specialist and associate professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE), the project was initially created to assist Extension educators. He explained, “The project started as a tool for Extension educators. We wanted to develop something they can use to learn more about the agriculture injuries in their own communities and to compare different regions. Eventually, we decided to also include search options for researchers, who may have different data demands.”
One of the platform’s key features is its interactive design. Users can select specific years, injury categories, and other factors to view detailed information through graphs and charts. The system automatically updates connected displays, making it easier to identify relationships and trends within the data.
Sihan Li, visiting Extension outreach associate and former doctoral student in ABE, highlighted the dashboard’s ability to provide detailed insights through interactive tools. She said, “Everything is interactive. If you click on any given year and a certain type of injury, every chart will highlight that specific injury type and provide the age, gender, and fatality distribution. These charts work in tandem, which allows you to hone in on the data according to your needs.”
The Agricultural Injury Dashboard represents an important step toward improving agricultural safety. By making injury information easier to access and analyze, the platform can help educators, researchers, and communities better understand risks, develop targeted safety programs, and support efforts to prevent accidents across the agricultural sector.
