Iowa Farm Bureau Commends Legislative Action Supporting Agriculture

Iowa Farm Bureau Commends Legislative Action Supporting Agriculture

Priorities Addressed in 2024 Iowa Legislative Session

By Andi Anderson

The Iowa Farm Bureau extends gratitude to the governor and legislators for their attention to critical policy and budget priorities vital to agriculture and rural communities. Among the notable achievements is the reinstatement of the capital gains tax deduction for the sale of breeding livestock. This measure prevents a direct tax increase for livestock farmers, particularly benefiting young and beginning farmers.

Farm Bureau members applaud the governor's initiatives regarding foreign ownership of Iowa agricultural land. Legislative action supporting her bill enhances transparency and enforcement of Iowa's leading foreign ownership laws, aligning with the state's agricultural interests. Additionally, members welcome property taxpayer protections, including the preservation of funding levels for the Homestead Tax Credit and Ag Land and Family Farm Tax Credit, alongside the continuation of property tax replacement payments for K-12 education.

The legislature's commitment to conservation progress is also commended by Farm Bureau members. Sustained funding for established conservation efforts through the Conservation Cost-Share program and Water Quality Initiative (WQI) reinforces Iowa's position as a national leader in various conservation practices. These initiatives underscore Iowa's dedication to improving water quality and environmental stewardship.

The Iowa Farm Bureau appreciates the collaborative efforts of the governor and legislators in addressing key priorities for agriculture and rural Iowa. Through proactive policies and strategic budget allocations, the state continues to support its farming communities while advancing conservation and sustainability initiatives.
