On Wednesday, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig announced a new initiative aimed at reducing food insecurity in communities across the state. The Choose Iowa Food Purchasing Program – Food Bank Pilot seeks to link food banks with choose Iowa members, including local farmers and agricultural businesses.
The Iowa department of agriculture has committed $225,000 to support food banks in delivering healthy food to those in need.
“Food insecurity is a real and pressing issue in communities big and small, urban and rural,” Naig stated. “Choose Iowa is focused on connecting consumers to excellent Iowa products produced by our farmers and small businesses.” Naig further said “And now thanks to the support from the Iowa Legislature and Gov. Reynolds this past session, Choose Iowa will also help connect farmers with food banks to combat food insecurity within our communities.”
Participating food banks, such as the Food Bank of Siouxland, will match the state’s investment on a one-to-one basis.
These food banks will use the funds to purchase essential products like dairy and meat from Choose Iowa members, ensuring that nutritious food reaches those who require it most.
The reimbursement deadline for participating food banks is set for June 30, 2025. This initiative not only aims to address immediate food needs but also supports local farmers and strengthens the agricultural economy in Iowa.
