By Andi Anderson

The Iowa State Fair Weed Identification Contest is back, offering a unique learning opportunity for both youth and adults. Scheduled for Friday, August 8, 2025, the event will run from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM at the John Deere Agriculture Building, located on the Iowa State Fairgrounds at 3000 E Grand Ave., Des Moines, Iowa.

This popular contest is held every year on the first Friday of the Iowa State Fair. It challenges participants to identify different weed species using their common names. Whether you are a student, teacher, farmer, gardener, or simply an agriculture enthusiast, the contest is a fun way to test your plant knowledge and learn more about weeds found in Iowa and surrounding regions.

Participants can expect a hands-on experience with real weed samples. The contest is open to all ages, and individuals can participate solo or as part of a group. It is designed to encourage agricultural education and awareness of weed species that impact farming, gardens, and natural spaces.

The event is organized by agriculture professionals and supported by local extension services. If you have questions or would like more information, Meaghan Anderson is the main contact for the event and can be reached at (319) 331-0058.

Whether you are competing for fun or want to brush up on your weed identification skills, this contest offers a great learning experience in a casual and friendly environment.

Mark your calendars and stop by the Ag Building to join in the fun. The Iowa State Fair Weed ID Contest is an exciting part of the fair’s mission to promote agricultural knowledge among all generations.
