Iowa State University Invites Community to Apple Open House

Iowa State University Invites Community to Apple Open House

By Andi Anderson

Iowa State University will celebrate apple season with its annual Apple Open House at the ISU Horticulture Research Station on September 13 from noon to 2 p.m. The event, free and open to the public, offers visitors a chance to enjoy Iowa’s apple harvest in a unique and educational setting.

Guests will have the opportunity to sample 10 apple cultivars not commonly found in grocery stores, along with fresh Iowa cider and fall donuts. The event also highlights apple research led by Suzanne Slack, assistant professor and extension fruit crops specialist, and horticulture graduate students.

The open house will showcase both heritage varieties and new cultivars that may be available at local orchards in the coming years. Visitors can also explore current orchard research projects, participate in informal tours, and ask questions about apple growing in Iowa.

“Participants will get to try new types of apples that are uncommon at the grocery store but can be purchased from local orchards in Iowa this fall,” Slack explained.

The Apple Open House is free to attend, though advance online registration is encouraged to ensure enough apples are prepared for visitors. Walk-ins are also welcome.

The ISU Horticulture Research Station, located northeast of Ames at 55519 170th Street, will serve as the venue. The event provides a fun and educational way for families, apple  enthusiasts, and community members to learn more about fruit production in Iowa.
