By Andi Anderson

The 2025 Equine Extravaganza, hosted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, took place on April 12-13 at the Ellsworth Community College Equestrian Center in Iowa Falls. This annual event brought together nearly 60 youth from grades 3 to 12, providing a platform to demonstrate their equine knowledge and creative abilities.

Organized by the Iowa 4-H Youth Development Program, the event featured competitions in hippology, horse judging, quiz bowls, presentations, and public speaking. Participants could compete individually or as part of a team, promoting teamwork, communication, and leadership skills.

27 youths submitted 68 entries in the horseless horse category, showcasing talents in photography, painting, drawing, scrapbooking, woodworking, 3-D art, digital storytelling, model horses, and creative writing.

Top performers in the senior divisions earned the opportunity to represent Iowa 4-H at the Eastern National Roundup in Louisville, Kentucky, this November.

Notable winners included Rylee Ferwerda from Boone County in both horse judging and hippology, and Olivia Van Beek from Sioux County in the senior quiz bowl. The Boone County team excelled in both senior horse judging and hippology team events.

The event emphasized a supportive environment valuing fairness, respect, and sportsmanship. Lisa Berkland, 4-H youth development specialist, highlighted the importance of such events in allowing youth to showcase their learning.

Peggy Auwerda, equine specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach, noted the development of cooperation and leadership skills among participants.

Beyond competitions, the Extravaganza fostered connections among youths sharing a passion for horses, inspiring confidence and enthusiasm in their equine journeys. For a complete list of award winners and more information, visit the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach website.
