Iowa Youth Shine in 4-H Livestock Triathlon Event

Iowa Youth Shine in 4-H Livestock Triathlon Event

By Andi Anderson

From May 2–4, more than 165 young participants from across Iowa gathered at Iowa State University’s Hansen Agricultural Student Learning Center for the second annual Iowa 4-H Livestock Triathlon.

This event tested youth in grades 4–12 across three core competitions—livestock judging, skillathon, and quiz bowl—highlighting their skills in animal science and agriculture.

During the livestock judging competition, students evaluated ten classes of animals including cattle, swine, sheep, and goats. They judged each based on key traits like conformation, muscling, and structural soundness, applying careful observation and expert decision-making.

The skillathon segment offered hands-on challenges in livestock management. Youth identified breeds and meat cuts, judged hay, and practiced swine selection. These practical exercises tested their broad knowledge of livestock and their ability to apply it in real-life scenarios.

The quiz bowl added an exciting, fast-paced element. Teams of students competed in head-to-head matches, answering rapid-fire questions on topics such as nutrition, genetics, and industry practices. The competition required not only deep knowledge but also teamwork and quick thinking.

Winners of the senior divisions in each event earned the honor of representing Iowa at the National 4-H Contests in Louisville, Kentucky this November. In addition, 63 students competed in all three events and were named elite Livestock Triathletes. Top point earners were celebrated at the awards ceremony held on May 4.

Celine Beggs-Shoemaker, Iowa 4-H animal science specialist, emphasized the broader value of the program, saying, “These programs not only deepen their understanding of animal science but prepare them to be thoughtful leaders and problem-solvers.”

Participants like Jillian Hansen and Ben Yoerger shared how the triathlon strengthened their knowledge and life goals. This event not only celebrates agricultural education but inspires future leaders in the field.
