Iowa’s Eco Leaders Meet This September

Iowa’s Eco Leaders Meet This September

By Andi Anderson

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Master Conservationist Program will host its third annual statewide alumni meet-up on Friday, September 5, and Saturday, September 6, near Indianola. The event is open to all past and recent graduates of the program, and registration is now available.

The Master Conservationist Program, run in collaboration with state and local conservation leaders, operates in counties across Iowa with the goal of building strong local conservation advocates. More than 800 Iowans have completed the program, contributing to conservation projects across thousands of acres of land.

Gina Buelow, natural resources field specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach, encouraged alumni to participate. “This event is a great opportunity for all Master Conservationist Program graduates to connect and continue learning about conservation efforts in the state,” she said.

The two-day program will feature both educational and recreational activities. On Friday, participants will gather at Wesley Woods Camp and Retreat Center near Lake Ahquabi State Park for an evening orientation and interactive learning.

An optional pre-meeting workshop will be held from noon to 3 p.m., led by Kay Stefanik from the Iowa Nutrient Research Center, focusing on water quality testing and monitoring.

Saturday’s activities include morning and afternoon field tours, giving participants the chance to explore parks, businesses, and conservation projects in Warren, Polk, and Madison counties.

The day will also feature a shared lunch and an update on lake restoration work at Lake Ahquabi State Park.

Registration is required for the meet-up. The early-bird registration fee is $40 until August 22, increasing to $50 afterward. The fee includes dinner on Friday, snacks and lunch on Saturday, and a commemorative t-shirt.

This event offers alumni the chance to reconnect, learn from experts, and see conservation in action across Iowa’s diverse landscapes.
