John Deere has announced another round of layoffs at its Des Moines Works plant in Ankeny, Iowa, cutting 119 jobs in three phases. The job reductions will take place on March 28, April 4, and April 29.
The Ankeny facility employs approximately 1,500 workers, and this move marks the 16th round of layoffs by the company in the past year. Deere has already reduced about 2,000 jobs across its Iowa plants, citing ongoing challenges in the farm economy as the primary reason for the job cuts.
Company officials clarified that the layoffs are not due to shifting production elsewhere. However, Deere has previously faced criticism for relocating some manufacturing lines from its Waterloo and Ottumwa plants to Mexico.
The decision led to a response from policymakers, including a September warning from then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, who proposed a 200% tariff on products made in Mexico by Deere.
The struggling farm economy has affected demand for agricultural equipment, leading to workforce reductions at various facilities. The job cuts highlight the broader challenges facing the agricultural machinery industry, with companies adjusting to economic pressures.
Despite the layoffs, Deere continues to maintain a significant workforce in Iowa, where it operates multiple manufacturing plants. As economic conditions evolve, the company may reassess its employment needs based on market demand and industry trends.
