Join the fun at the Kansas 4-H wheat expo on August 12

By Scout Nelson

It’s county 4-H fair season in Kansas! Mark your calendars for the Kansas 4-H Wheat Expo on August 12, 2024, at Pottorf Hall in Manhattan, Kansas.

This one-day event, sponsored by the Kansas Wheat Commission and other partners, offers a fantastic showcase and learning opportunity for youth and adults alike.

The Wheat Expo is designed as an educational and hands-on program for all Kansas 4-H members, their families, and K-State Research and Extension staff. Participants do not need to be enrolled in crops or plant science projects to join.

The event provides great opportunities for adding learning experiences to record books, especially for those in foods and nutrition, photography, and field crops projects.

The event runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and includes tours of the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center and the Hal Ross Flour Mill.

The Kansas Wheat Innovation Center is where scientists create new wheat varieties with greater yields and quality, and the Hal Ross Flour Mill teaches students and industry workers about the flour-making process.

Lunch and refreshments are provided, but there is a $10 registration fee to offset costs. Register by July 25 at https://bit.ly/wheatexpo.

The event features a wheat judging contest and a Market Wheat Show for 4-H and FFA youth ages 7 to 19 and Cloverbuds ages 5 to 6. Enrollment in the project is not required, except for Division 1.

Cash awards are available for the top three placings in each division, along with ribbons for all entries.
