Kansas Conservation Leaders Advance to 2026 Finals

Kansas Conservation Leaders Advance to 2026 Finals

By Scout Nelson

Three Kansas agricultural operations have been selected as finalists for the 2026 Kansas Leopold Conservation Award, which recognizes farmers and ranchers for outstanding conservation and land stewardship efforts. According to the Sand County Foundation and the Kansas Association of Conservation Districts (KACD), the award honors landowners who balance environmental responsibility with productive agricultural practices.

DL Cattle Company of Fredonia, owned by Daryl and Jody Donohue, is among the finalists. The operation uses conservation practices such as prescribed burning, cedar removal, no-till farming, cover crop grazing, cross-fencing and invasive species management to improve soil health and sustain livestock production.

Phil Eastep of Janus Farms and Choteau Creek Winery near Cherryvale is also a finalist. His diversified operation combines cow-calf production with timber management, wildlife habitat improvement, grassland restoration and hay production, helping strengthen both environmental and economic resilience.

Glenn and Barbara Walker of Walker Ranch near Brookville were named finalists for their commitment to preserving native grasslands and supporting wildlife habitats. The ranch employs adaptive grazing practices and has permanently protected more than 4,000 acres through a conservation easement.

The winner of the 2026 Kansas Leopold Conservation Award will be announced at the Kansas Association of Conservation Districts Convention in November. The award is presented by conservation and agricultural organizations, including the Sand County Foundation, American Farmland Trust, KACD, Kansas Farm Bureau and Ranchland Trust of Kansas.
