Kansas crop progress excels in April 2024 report

The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service has released a promising update on Kansas's agricultural progress for the week ending April 21, 2024. Farmers experienced 5.9 days suitable for fieldwork, facilitating notable advancements in crop management and planting.

Topsoil moisture levels were diverse with 27% reported as very short, 38% short, 34% adequate, and a minimal 1% surplus. Similarly, subsoil moisture showed 24% very short, 40% short, 35% adequate, and 1% surplus, indicating a range of conditions across the state.

The winter wheat showed a robust progression with 72% of the crop jointed, significantly surpassing last year's 41% and the five-year average of 48%. The wheat's overall condition varied with 8% rated very poor, 18% poor, 38% fair, 33% good, and 3% excellent. 4% of the wheat had headed, aligning closely with the previous year's figures.

Corn planting reached 26%, slightly ahead of the 22% recorded last year and well above the average of 18%. The emergence of corn was also favorable at 3%, comparable to last year and higher than the average.

Soybean planting progressed to 6%, doubling the average and closely mirroring last year’s rate. Sorghum planting commenced with 1% completion, marking the start of its season.

This report underscores a positive trend in crop development and agricultural activity in Kansas.
