Kansas Department of Agriculture to Host 19th Annual Grape Stomp Event

Kansas Department of Agriculture to Host 19th Annual Grape Stomp Event

By Scout Nelson

The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) is bringing back one of the most entertaining traditions at the Kansas State Fair — the Kansas Grape Stomp. The 19th annual event will take place on Saturday, September 6, at 1:00 p.m. in Gottschalk Park in Hutchinson.

The grape stomp invites fairgoers to experience the fun of grape crushing, while also recognizing the important contributions of the grape and winery industries in Kansas. Participants can feel the squish of grapes under their feet in a time-honored tradition that blends agriculture, celebration, and education.

The event begins with a competitive stop-off featuring state and local leaders, followed by an open stop where all fair attendees can join in. This provides both entertainment and an engaging way to learn about Kansas agriculture.

“Gather around the grape tubs to watch state and local leaders and others stomp grapes to salute the Kansas grape and farm winery industries,” organizers encourage.

As of August 2025, Kansas is home to 51 farm wineries. These wineries are a growing part of the state’s agritourism sector, contributing to local economies and expanding opportunities for visitors to enjoy Kansas-grown products. KDA remains committed to supporting the state’s grape and winery industries as part of its broader mission to promote agriculture, Kansas’s largest industry and economic contributor.

The annual grape stomp is more than just a fun tradition — it is a reminder of the vital role agriculture plays in Kansas culture and economy. Visitors to the State Fair are encouraged to join the event, enjoy the experience, and learn more about Kansas-grown grapes and wines.
