For the week ending April 20, 2025, Kansas farmers experienced 5.8 days suitable for fieldwork, as reported by the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Field activities across the state moved steadily forward, supported by generally favorable weather.
Topsoil moisture supplies were rated at 17% very short, 33% short, 44% adequate, and 6% surplus. Subsoil moisture conditions were similar, with 17% rated very short, 33% short, 45% adequate, and 5% surplus.
Winter wheat progress continues, with 66% of the crop reported joined. This matches closely with last year’s 69% and is ahead of the five-year average of 51%. Additionally, 6% of the crop has headed, which is ahead of both last year (3%) and the average (1%). Wheat condition ratings are as follows: 6% very poor, 16% poor, 37% fair, 37% good, and 4% excellent.
Corn planting is progressing well, with 27% of the crop planted. This is slightly ahead of 24% from the same time last year and well ahead of the five-year average of 18%. Corn emergence stood at 3%, which aligns with last year and is slightly above the five-year average of 2%.
Soybean planting is also underway, with 5% planted. This matches last year’s pace and is slightly ahead of the average of 2%. Sorghum planting was reported at 1%, which is consistent with last year’s numbers.
Overall, Kansas continues to see positive progress in its spring planting and crop development, with moderate improvements in soil moisture and crop health.
