Kansas Gains New Pest Control Plan

Kansas Gains New Pest Control Plan

By Scout Nelson

The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has released an updated response plan to manage the threat of New World screwworm (NWS), a harmful pest that affects livestock. The updated playbook is designed to help federal and state officials, including those in Kansas, respond quickly and effectively if the pest is detected in the United States.

The first version of this plan was introduced in October 2025. After receiving feedback from industry experts, veterinary groups, and livestock organizations, APHIS improved the plan to make it more practical and detailed. This updated version focuses on preparedness and early action to reduce risks to agriculture.

“While we are aggressively safeguarding American agriculture and working with Mexico to prevent further northward spread, we must also ensure that our domestic response plans are ready for immediate activation,” said USDA Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs Dudley Hoskins. “Strong coordination with states, producers, veterinarians, sportsmen and other partners is essential to achieving that goal.”

The updated plan outlines key strategies such as improving coordination between agencies, reducing the spread of the pest, and preventing its establishment in new areas. It also includes clear steps for managing infected animals, monitoring screwworm flies, and applying control measures. These actions are especially important for livestock-producing states like Kansas, where animal health plays a major role in the economy.

APHIS has also clarified roles and responsibilities for agencies and improved guidelines for animal movement and wildlife management. These updates ensure better communication and faster decision-making during an outbreak. Maintaining business continuity is another key focus, helping farmers and industries continue operations with minimal disruption.

APHIS will continue to update the plan as new information becomes available and as state-level preparedness efforts grow. More details about prevention and response efforts can be found on the official site.

This updated plan supports Kansas and other states in staying prepared, protecting livestock, and ensuring a strong agricultural future.
