Kansas Hosts Burn Planning Workshops

Kansas Hosts Burn Planning Workshops

By Scout Nelson

The Kansas Grazing Lands Coalition will host three Prescribed Burn Plan Writing Workshops next month to help land managers better understand and use prescribed fire. These workshops are designed to be hands on, practical, and easy to follow for participants with different levels of experience.

Prescribed fire is an important tool for managing grasslands. When used correctly, it helps control unwanted plants, supports healthy grass growth, and improves soil conditions. Fire can also reduce the risk of larger, uncontrolled wildfires by safely removing excess plant material. The workshops will explain why prescribed fire is used and how it supports long-term land management goals.

Each session will guide participants through the full process of writing a burn plan. Topics will include basic fire behavior, safety planning, weather considerations, equipment needs, and communication before, during, and after a burn. Participants will learn how to match burn plans with specific land goals while keeping people, property, and natural resources safe.

A key focus of the workshops is safety. Instructors will explain how proper planning reduces risks and ensures burns are carried out responsibly. Participants will also receive useful resources that can be applied beyond the workshop setting. By the end of the training, attendees will have the confidence to develop a clear and effective burn plan.

The workshops will be held on February 9 in Hutchinson, February 12 in Ness City, and February 17 in Lincoln. Each event offers the same learning experience, allowing participants to choose the most convenient location.

Registration is required and will close one week before each workshop date. Those interested can sign up through the Kansas Grazing Lands Coalition website at www.kglc.org. These workshops provide a valuable learning opportunity for anyone interested in improving grasslands through safe and well planned prescribed fire use.
